An SOP on First Aid in Pharma defines the standard procedure for providing immediate medical assistance to employees, visitors, contractors, or workers during injury, illness, or emergency situations within a pharmaceutical facility. The purpose of this SOP is to ensure quick response, reduce the severity of injury, prevent complications, and support workplace safety compliance.
This SOP applies to all departments, including production, quality control, quality assurance, warehouse, engineering, packing, administration, utility areas, and laboratories. It covers common incidents such as minor cuts, burns, chemical exposure, eye injury, fainting, electric shock, slips, falls, breathing difficulty, allergic reactions, and other workplace emergencies.
The SOP should clearly define responsibilities. Trained first aiders are responsible for providing immediate care until professional medical help arrives. HR or the safety department is responsible for arranging first aid training, maintaining first aid boxes, and ensuring availability of emergency contact numbers. Department heads must ensure that employees report injuries immediately.
First aid boxes should be available at identified locations and must contain approved items such as sterile gauze, bandages, cotton, antiseptic solution, adhesive tape, burn dressing, scissors, gloves, eye wash solution, and emergency instruction cards. The contents should be checked periodically for expiry, damage, and availability.
In case of injury, the affected person should be moved to a safe area, if possible. The first aider should assess the condition, wear gloves, provide suitable first aid, and avoid giving unauthorized medicines. For chemical splash, the affected area should be washed immediately with plenty of water. For eye exposure, eye wash should be used continuously as per procedure. Serious cases must be referred to a doctor or hospital immediately.
All incidents must be recorded in the first aid register with employee name, department, date, time, type of injury, first aid given, name of first aider, and further action taken. Repeated incidents should be reviewed for preventive action.
