1. BMR – Batch Manufacturing Record
- A GMP document that describes how to manufacture a specific product batch.
- It is the master recipe + evidence of what actually happened during Batch manufacturing & Packing Record.
Typical contents:
- Product name, strength, dosage form
- Batch size, batch number
- List of raw materials with quantities & codes
- Equipment & line details
- Step-by-step manufacturing instructions (sifting, granulation, drying, blending, compression, coating, etc.)
- In-process checks and limits
- Yield calculations (theoretical vs actual)
- Signatures of operator / checker / QA at each critical step
- Deviations & remarks section
Purpose:
To ensure each batch is manufactured consistently as per approved process and to provide a complete, traceable history for that batch.
2. BPR – Batch Packaging Record
- A GMP document that describes how to pack a specific product batch.
- It is the master instructions + evidence of what happened during packaging.
Typical contents:
- Product name, strength, dosage form
- Batch number, pack size, and configuration (e.g. 10’s blister, 60’s bottle)
- Printed component details (cartons, foils, labels, inserts) with codes
- Overprinting details (batch no., mfg/exp date, MRP where applicable)
- Line clearance details
- Step-by-step packaging instructions (blistering, bottling, labelling, cartoning, shipper packing)
- In-process checks (print checks, leak test, weight variation for bottles, reconciliation)
- Reconciliation of printed & packaging components
- Signatures of production / IPQA in relevant stages
Purpose:
To ensure each batch is packed correctly, safely and traceably as per the approved packaging configuration.
3. Key Difference Batch manufacturing & Packing Record.
| Aspect | BMR (Batch Manufacturing Record) | BPR (Batch Packaging Record) |
|---|---|---|
| Stage | Manufacturing (bulk) | Packaging (finished packs) |
| Focus | Process of making the product | Process of packing & labelling the product |
| Major risks covered | Quality of bulk: assay, content uniformity, etc. | Mix-ups, mislabelling, wrong components, shortages |
| Typical area | Granulation, compression, coating, etc. | Blister, bottle line, labelling, cartoning lines |
Both BMR and BPR are GMP-critical documents – regulators (FDA, MHRA, CDSCO, etc.) review them to verify that:
- The batch was made as per the approved process.
- All critical steps and checks were done and recorded (ALCOA+).
- Any deviation / abnormality is documented and investigated.
